This is a red made for freshness rather than muscle: three of Portugal's great native grapes, given only a short maceration and kept well away from oak. Hugo Mendes blends Tinta Roriz (Portugal's name for Tempranillo), Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional from Lisboa, then ferments and ages the wine in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. That's his approach everywhere. He works almost entirely with the region's own grapes, which is rare in Lisboa. He came to wine late, as a biomedical engineer who worked his first harvest in 2004, and changed careers. When he went solo he got a good deal on a friend's grapes, made the wine in a friend's winery, and pre-sold bottles on social media to pay for bottling. The Pitau range also has a purpose beyond the glass: it was created to fund social work in the area near where Mendes and his wife grew up. Keep it around as an easy everyday bottle, and feel good about opening another.

More about Hugo Mendes

Hugo left his cellaring apprenticeship in 2016 to crowdfund his own label—first in Portugal—and it worked. Now he works from Alenquer north of Lisbon, focusing on forgotten grapes like Fernão Pires, Vital, and Castelão. His 'Underdog' label (made in ancient talhas) is the proof that unconventional wine deserves a shot. He's a wizard without the academy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled chouriço and crusty bread, bifanas (Portuguese pork sandwiches), piri-piri roast chicken, mushroom rice, or a weeknight plate of charcuterie and Portuguese cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Expect a light, fresh red in the Portuguese clarete style: bright red cherry and raspberry, a touch of plum and some floral lift, with no oak in the way. The short maceration typically keeps the body light and the tannins soft, and lively acidity leads to a juicy, dry finish. Think of a chillable Beaujolais with a bit more savoury grip.
