This is Friulano, Friuli's signature white grape, from a single vineyard of old vines, made with as little as possible standing between the site and the glass. The fruit comes from the San Pietro vineyard in the Gramogliano hills of Corno di Rosazzo, right on the Slovenian border. The vines grow in what the Zanussos call ponca, the local name for the region's marl-and-sandstone soil, and they are farmed organically and picked by hand. In the cellar the whole approach is subtraction. Whole clusters are pressed very gently and only the first, cleanest juice is kept. It ferments on its own yeasts until fully dry, then rests six months on its fine lees with no oak at all. That was Ferdinando Zanusso's founding idea: wines as "transparent" as possible. He came back after forty years working in Africa and started I Clivi in his wife's hometown in the mid-1990s, and his son Mario now runs the vineyards and the cellar. If Friulano (the grape once called Tocai Friulano) means an easygoing carafe white to you, this bottle shows how much more it can say.

More about I Clivi

I Clivi makes some of the purest, most transparent white wines in Friuli: old vines, native grapes, stainless steel, and nothing standing between the hillside and your glass. "The land makes this wine," says founder Ferdinando Zanusso, and the wines back him up.

Ferdinando bought the vineyards in the early 1990s after a career abroad, and the first wine came in 1996. He now runs the estate with his son Mario. Their roughly 12 hectares sit right at the border of Friuli's two great white-wine hill zones, near Slovenia. Most are on the Gramogliano hill at Corno di Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali, with the rest on the slopes of Monte Quarin at Brazzano in the Collio. Many of the vines are 40 to 80 years old and grow in ponca, the region's layered marl and sandstone. Farming is organic, and yields are naturally tiny.

In the cellar, the Zanussos use only free-run juice. It's fermented with native yeasts and raised in stainless steel, with no wood and no skin contact. Friulano is the heart of the range, alongside Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Verduzzo and the peppery local red Schioppettino. Expect wines of texture, saline minerality and quiet intensity rather than fireworks.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Prosciutto di San Daniele with melon; frico (Friulian potato-and-Montasio cheese cake); asparagus risotto with fresh herbs; grilled branzino with salsa verde; fritto misto of shrimp and zucchini.

Tasting Profile

Dry white. Lightly aromatic: fine herbs, wildflowers and a flinty note. Fresh, bright acidity balanced by a strong mineral, slightly salty streak. It finishes on a nutty, almost almond-like note.
