Half of this Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru comes from 100-year-old vines, and none of them are younger than 65. That is rare raw material for any white Burgundy. The fruit comes from the very top of the En Cailleret slope, a very rocky site, and vines that old growing on ground that hard make for a concentrated starting point. Joseph Colin is Marc Colin's son and Pierre-Yves Colin's younger brother. After Pierre-Yves left in 2003, he ran Domaine Marc Colin with his two younger siblings. In 2017 he took a little over six hectares of the family's vines and started his own domaine. He keeps a light touch in the cellar: the vineyard is farmed sustainably, the wine ferments on native yeast, and it's bottled unfined and unfiltered. If you know Joseph's other wines, this is where to go for something deeper.

"A more elegant and slightly cooler nose reflects notes of white flower, pear and discreet orange peel aromas that are trimmed in admirably subtle wood. There is fine volume to the delicious and borderline plump medium weight flavors that possess an abundance of mouthcoating sap that also serves to buffer the firm acid spine on the youthfully austere, lemon zest-inflected and long finale. This lightly stony effort could use better depth so plan on at least a few years of cellaring."

"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet En Cailleret 1er Cru has a clean and precise, slightly austere bouquet that will need time to find its voice in bottle. The palate has decent weight on the entry but does not quite follow up with the complexity and depth that this noble vineyard can deliver." —Neal Martin

"Joseph Colin has produced a Chassagne En Caillerets that is among the great wines of the village in 2024, offering pronounced aromas of lemon peel, acacia flowers, iodine and smoke. The texture is fresh and lively, but there is enough concentration and body here to allow the wine to age for decades. The domaine farms 0.40ha of very old vines (up to 100 years old) at the top of the slope, in thin, rocky soils. They are gently pressed and aged in 500- and 600-litre barrels (10% new) for a year and in tank for another four months."

More about Joseph Colin

Joseph Colin split from the family estate in 2017 and launched his own domaine with 6.5 hectares in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet. His whole-bunch pressing, native yeasts, and minimalist approach yield 21 different cuvées—a young hand redefining what Côte de Beaune can be.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Butter-poached lobster; turbot or halibut with beurre blanc; roast chicken with morels and cream; scallops seared in brown butter; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Chassagne premier cru profile: ripe citrus, white peach and a hint of hazelnut over a stony, chalky minerality, with real depth from very old vines on rocky ground. Typically medium- to full-bodied yet taut, with bright acidity for focus and a long, saline finish. Think Puligny-style tension rather than broad, rich Meursault, and built to age.
