Drouhin's slice of the smallest Grand Cru on the Gevrey hill, named for the sour-cherry note that runs through its wines. Griotte-Chambertin covers just 2.7 hectares total — only La Romanée, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, La Grande Rue, and Romanée-Conti are smaller among Burgundy's Grands Crus — and Drouhin's holding is a tiny 0.52-hectare parcel within that postage stamp. The square-shaped vineyard sits completely enclosed by other Gevrey Grands Crus, with a northeastern aspect that gives slower ripening and lifted aromatics. Joseph Drouhin has been family-owned since 1880, with organic farming begun in the late 1980s/early 1990s and full organic certification achieved later, biodynamic later. 2019 was a concentrated, structured Burgundy vintage; six years on, this is still primary and serious, with the architecture to evolve for another decade-plus in a cool cellar.

Decanter

"Drouhin counts themselves among the happy few who produce a wine from this tiny grand cru. They own just over a half-hectare out of 2.73 total, and their rendition is consistently among their top wines. The character is different from most of Gevrey in that the emphasis is less on the structure and tannin and more on the lush, silky fruit. Here aromas of ripe cherry and plum are complemented by floral notes and a suggestion of earth. This is a wine of superb finesse."

More about Joseph Drouhin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
