At 621 meters, Passo del Lume Spento (“lights out”—so windy the locals’ candles blow out) is Montalcino’s highest vineyard, a designation that only recently became possible. Until 2016, this altitude exceeded regulations; Campinoti’s first vintage from this windswept sandstone plateau arrived in 2017. Here, elevation and exposure create a Brunello unlike any other in Le Ragnaie’s portfolio: mid-weight, crunchy with mineral tension, sinewy with an almost Alpine purity. Lavender and fennel drift above smoky earth, and the wine’s sinewy structure speaks to cool-climate ripening and the unique character of high-altitude Montalcino. This is the future of Brunello—elegant, mineral-driven, terroir in its purest form.

"Grilled herbs and crushed ashen stones give way to pine shavings and woodland berries as the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Passo Del Lume Spento creates its beguiling bouquet. It is savory to the core, with stern minerality upfront that adds a salty contrast to its core of red fruits and inner rosy florals. Nearly wiry in feel through the finish, it reveals a youthful tension as edgy tannins linger, offset by a bump of residual acidity. In 2021 the Passo Del Lume Spento has an almost sultry character, which I'm really enjoying." —Eric Guido

"The Le Ragnaie 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento (with 4,400 bottles produced) offers a blossoming bouquet that shifts continuously with each swirl of the glass. Aged for 42 months in large Slavonian oak casks, the wine delivers striking freshness and almost icy sensations on the palate, with crisp contours, sharp focus and a brilliantly vertical profile. Sourced from one hectare at 621 meters in elevation on galestro and sandstone soils, it combines darker fruit and savory minerality with firm structure. The high elevation plays a decisive role in preserving the biting freshness and punchy energy that make this wine so compelling." —Monica Larner

More about Le Ragnaie

Riccardo Campinoti farms the highest-altitude vines in Brunello—up to 655 meters—where regulations say you can't go. His Troncone Sangiovese, an IGT for refusing to play by the rules, has cranberry brightness and stony minerality that prove his point perfectly.

Tasting Profile

Gregory Gouges is a very fortunate young man. He has free rein at one of the most historic domains in all of the Cote D'Or. There is a brand new state of the art gravity driven cuverie that his predecessors built after years of careful planning. The family vineyards encompass some of the greatest terroirs in Nuits Saint Georges including the 3.5 hectare Monopole "Clos des Porrets Saint Georges". The parcels are large and the vines are mature and in fantastic health.

The style at Gouges has been updated. For years, heavy extraction resulted in tannic wines that took many years to come around. If you ever come across old bottles, they are fantastic. Under Gregory Gouges, the tannins are managed more carefully and the wines are now made in a style with greater emphasis on finesse and fruit purity, allowing the greatness of Gouges' terroir to really shine.
