A 2002 from Clos du Four, the prized vineyard of Milly-Lamartine, made in the early years of Dominique Lafon's push to prove the Mâconnais deserved serious attention. In 1999 Lafon bought vineyards in a region long known for over-cropped co-op Chardonnay, brought biodynamic farming with him, and treated his little-known parcels like premier crus. Clos du Four is a 1.4-hectare clos in a steep amphitheatre right behind the winery. Its east-facing vines sit mid-slope at 250 metres in deep soil with more clay than most parcels in the commune, full of limestone and small rocks broken off the bedrock. Clos du Four is built to be mineral and long, and its richness usually needs at least a year in bottle to show. This one has had more than twenty. Mature single-vineyard Mâcon from a site this good is an unusual find, and a fine bottle for the curious Burgundy drinker.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, veal blanquette, aged Comté, or a gratin of leeks and Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect Mâcon Chardonnay in its more serious mode: yellow apple, pear and citrus over a stony, limestone minerality, with a rounded, creamy texture from malolactic and large neutral wood rather than obvious oak. Bright acidity keeps it fresh and the finish is dry and long; think a leaner cousin of Meursault, a style that gains richness with bottle age.
