This is the top of the Milly-Lamartine ladder. Clos du Four is the commune's prized vineyard, a steep amphitheatre right behind Lafon's winery, and only the old vines at its heart, where the exposure is best, go into this bottling. (Most of the rest goes into the village Milly-Lamartine.) The vines sit mid-slope at 250 metres, facing east, on deep soil with more clay than most parcels in the commune, full of limestone and small rocks broken off the bedrock. Dominique Lafon was the first Côte d'Or producer to put money into the Mâconnais when he founded the domaine in 1999. He runs it as a biodynamic domaine. From the start the domaine has aged its wines only in larger, neutral wood, so you taste the site, not the barrel. If you file Mâcon under "drink it young," a 2007 single-vineyard bottle from a Côte d'Or great is a good reason to think again.

Tasting Profile

Expect a mineral, layered Mâcon: ripe orchard fruit, lemon and white flowers over a stony, limestone edge. Ageing in large neutral wood after malolactic fermentation typically brings a rounder, creamier texture without obvious oak, balanced by fresh acidity and a long, saline finish. Think of a riper, more generous cousin of Chablis.
