Dominique Lafon was the first Côte d'Or producer to put his money into the Mâconnais, and his Viré-Clessé shows why the bet made sense. He founded Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999, but first he had to talk a family of more than thirty members into buying land outside the Côte d'Or. He brought biodynamic farming with him. The house makes this cuvée from several parcels in the Viré commune, all on a mid-slope that faces east at about 250 metres, on clay-limestone over limestone bedrock. The vines were planted between 1950 and 1990. In the cellar the approach stays hands-off: aging only in large, neutral wood, so the fruit and the limestone come through and new oak doesn't get in the way. You get Côte d'Or-level thinking at a Mâconnais price, and this 2012 is a rare chance to try the cuvée after more than a decade in bottle.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels and cream, seared scallops with brown butter, sole meunière, lobster, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the generous, sunny side of white Burgundy: ripe orchard fruit, lemon and a hint of white flowers, with a rounded, medium-plus body. Aging in large neutral wood typically adds texture rather than toasty oak flavour, so the limestone shows through as a chalky, saline edge and fresh acidity. Think a riper, rounder Chablis with a long, clean finish.
