The Lonardo family has lived in Taurasi since the late 18th century, but only began estate-bottling in 1998 under Sandro Lonardo, a schoolteacher, and his wife Enza. Their 5 hectares of organically-farmed Aglianico (certified since 2016) sit at 350-400 meters on south-facing volcanic clay slopes. Aglianico is sometimes called "the Nebbiolo of the South" for its tannic structure and aging potential, and Lonardo's approach is traditionally minded: long macerations of 15-60 days, followed by 30 months aging including time in 600-liter tonneaux. The 2020 shows the grape's characteristic power—dark cherry, plum, tobacco, black pepper—with the vibrant tannins that demand food. Despite the intensity, there's refinement here. Pair with rich braises or aged hard cheeses and let it breathe.
