Before there was even a Maison Louis Jadot, there was this vineyard. The Jadot family bought Clos des Ursules in 1826, more than three decades before founding their famous house, and it has been theirs alone ever since—a walled monopole of barely three acres tucked inside the Vignes Franches premier cru at the southern edge of Beaune, on land the Ursuline nuns worked for roughly two centuries (convent founded 1626, plot sold to Jadot family in 1826). This is the founding stone of the whole house. The 1999 had the luck of being born in one of the great red Burgundy vintages, ripe and silky and beautifully balanced from the start, and premier crus like this one were built to go the distance. At better than a quarter-century old it is fully mature but still has flesh and depth—the more generous of these two sibling bottles. Pull the cork now.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Impressive dark red. Alluring aromas of raspberry, cherry, mocha, graphite, coffee and soy sauce (Frédéric Barnier noted that many of Jadot's 1999 crus from the Côte de Nuits are less evolved the its wines from the Côte de Beaune). Wonderfully sweet and concentrated, but firm and full of life as well, showing outstanding density and thickness for Beaune wine. Strong soil and saline mineral notes overshadow the wine's underlying fruit today but this wine's size and structure suggest that it's at the beginning of a fairly long period of peak drinkability. Finishes with serious fine-grained tannins and superb persistence." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Beaune Clos Des Ursules (domaine) offers a delectable rose, blackberry, black currant, and violet-scented nose. Medium-bodied and ample, this broad, harmonious, juicy cherry-filled wine has excellent depth and balance. It is delineated, refined, and pure." —Pierre Rovani

More about Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859, Jadot is one of Burgundy's great estates and négociants, with 600 acres scattered across the region's best vineyards—Chablis to Moulin-à-Vent. They make hundreds of wines, but each bottle carries the iconic Bacchus emblem and the weight of nearly two centuries of accumulated wisdom. Burgundy without the pretension.
