The Vinha Barrio abuts Vinha Formal to the east, in full view of the Bussaco Mountains (the western border of Dão) and sits on a pocket of extremely chalky soils with intermittent dollops of sand. The 2009s from Pato are in an incredibly pretty place right now, still with very youthful and buoyant fruit, yet melting tannins and a really succulent mid palate. This is an incredibly crowd pleasing wine.

Robert Parker

"The 2009 Vinha Barrio is also the current vintage of this vineyard of Baga from chalky-clay soil in a lower zone of the village of Óis do Barro that tends to have more acidity and more elegant tannins. The vines were 10 years of age then. The destemmed grapes fermented in plastic bins without temperature control, and the wine matured in used 650-liter French oak barrels for two years. It has 13.6% alcohol and 5.6 grams of acidity. It has a note of iron, reminiscent of rusty nails, blood and fresh meat, with some earthiness. It has a medium-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty fine tannins and a dry finish." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Luis Pato

Luis Pato trained as a chemical engineer before taking over his father's winery in the early 1980s. He then revolutionized Bairrada winemaking by destemming Baga and aging in new oak—radical, considered, precise. His Vinha Pan, Vinha Barrosa, and the remarkable Pé Franco from ungrafted vines are some of Portugal's greatest reds.
