The most immediately generous bottle in this five-vintage run of aged Muscadet, and the one to open first. Luneau-Papin, in Le Landreau, is one of the greatest addresses in Muscadet — up there with Pépière, Bregeon and Landron — and "L d'Or" is the family's flagship: old vines on a narrow vein of granite and two-mica gneiss off the Armorican Massif, fermented with native yeasts and left unracked on their fine lees in underground glass-tiled vats before bottling sur lie. Low alcohol, high natural acidity, no oak and long lees contact are precisely what let these wines go twenty years, which is why the cuvée has been a benchmark for ageworthy Muscadet since the late 1990s. 2006 was a vigneron's vintage: a hot July, then September rain that swept the western Loire and punished anyone who hesitated. Pierre Luneau picked fast and got his fruit in clean, and the result is rounder and softer-edged than its neighbours — less tension, more mellow orchard fruit, drinking beautifully right now rather than waiting. Serve cool, not cold, and give it a big glass.

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2006 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie L d'Or, the flagship of Luneau-Papin’s range, offers up a complex, fruity bouquet with aromas of pear, peach and orchard fruits. Some spices and white pepper aromas emerge from the glass after aeration. Medium-bodied, juicy and elegant, the wine on the palate is saline, tense and crystalline. Fully mature, it makes for uncomplicated drinking today." —Yohan Castaing

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"Rich and creamy outwardly, this is a wine with a dense, mineral core, which is built around tight apple skin flavors and crisp grapefruit. It is intense, lively, fresh but also concentrated."

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, a mushroom risotto, or smoked trout with crème fraîche. Also good with a cheese soufflé or a plate of Loire goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Golden. Baked apple, lemon curd, almond and a touch of honey. Medium-bodied and rounded, with a lees-fed creaminess and acidity that supports rather than cuts. Dry, gently saline finish of moderate length.

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
