Here's a chance to get in early with a brand-new La Morra estate. Maffrei is the project of brothers Andrea and Stefano Mascarello, who call themselves the "Bros in Wine." They're hardly beginners, though (the sibling nickname is more fun than the résumé). They grew up in a family with a long winemaking history in La Morra, both hold degrees in oenology, both have worked abroad, and they still work alongside their father and uncle. The vineyards they look after include Torriglione, which their grandfather planted a few years before he died. In 2021 they also bought the hilltop farmhouse next to their sand-dominant vineyard at the very top of La Morra. A Langhe Nebbiolo is the most approachable way to learn a young producer's style, and this 2025 is exactly the kind of bottle we like to catch before word gets around.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Langhe Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, raspberry, violet and a hint of dried herbs, with the perfumed, elegant lift La Morra is known for. Typically medium-bodied, with bright acidity and firm but fine-grained tannins, it finishes dry and savoury. Think of it as a lighter, more approachable take on Barolo.
