Marcel Lapierre was one of Kermit Lynch's original "Gang of Four", the Morgon producers who introduced so many of us to living, no-makeup Beaujolais. Today Mathieu and Camille Lapierre carry on his legacy. The Cuvee Marcel, made in honor of their father, comes only in exceptional years from very old vines (some over a century) on the great Cote du Py, and it's the estate's most concentrated bottling. MMXIV is the 2014 vintage, and at a decade old this serious Gamay is drinking in a beautiful mature window. A rare cuvee for Beaujolais lovers. Drink now over the next few years.

"This also plays right on the edge of perceptible brett but I again stress that it is extremely subtle and that few are likely to be bothered by it; in any event unlike higher brett levels that can, and often do, fight with the fruit such is absolutely not the case here on the pretty and cool red currant, cherry and pomegranate suffused aromas. There is good detail and a lovely sense of energy to the utterly delicious and seductively textured middle weight flavors where once again like the regular bottling there is no trace of brett on the ever-so-slightly warm finish."

"The 2014 Morgon Marcel Lapierre Cuvée MMXIV comes from 2.5 hectares planted in 1907-1910, just after phylloxera. The vines are located in the Le Douby climat, towards Fleurie, which the legendary Marcel Lapierre has intermittently bottled separately since 1999. Authorities refused the maiden vintage since it did not adhere to the typical Morgon style for reasons only known to them. To circumvent demotion into Vin de France, Marcel Lapierre’s son, the then teenage Mathieu, who is recounting this story in the sunny courtyard outside the winery in Villié-Morgon, suggested his father print the vintage in Roman numerals. Marcel worried that it would confuse foreign customers, but Mathieu pointed out how Americans numbered their Super Bowl (notwithstanding how many buildings and TV programs are dated in the UK). Henceforth, subsequent vintages have been numbered in this way. Now at ten years old, the 2014 is life-affirming, pure and harmonious on the nose. Not austere, rather airy, adorned with glinting shucked oyster shells commingling with vivid red cherry fruit. The aromatics…sparkle. The palate is linear, focused, vibrant and brims with energy. Outstanding in terms of balance with the almost understated, crystalline finish, this represents Gamay at its most sublime. Based on this bottle, the 2014 clearly has a long life ahead." —Neal Martin

More about Marcel Lapierre

Marcel Lapierre is the father of natural wine, and his domaine remains the blueprint. Organic vineyards, wild yeasts, no sulfur, biodynamic methods since 1981—these weren't fashionable choices then. Now his son and daughter carry on the legacy with 18 hectares of exemplary Beaujolais.
