Margherita Otto is a modern-day Barolo visionary—founded in 2015 by Alan Manley, an American restaurateur turned Piemontese winemaker managing just three hectares in Monforte d'Alba. Organic farming and traditional capello sommerso fermentation (45 days skin contact) yield mineral-driven Nebbiolo with remarkable structure and age-worthiness. The 2016 shows Alan's commitment to letting terroir express itself: elegant, driving tannins, fresh acidity, and a mineral core that promises 15-20 years of evolution. This is serious, thoughtfully-made Barolo from a producer who deliberately scaled small to maintain quality.

"The 2016 Barolo is a big step up for Margherita Otto and proprietor Alan Manley. Readers will find a decidedly strapping, old-school Barolo. It has been a number of years since I have tasted a Barolo like this. There is a bit of reduction and also some hints of rusticity in the aromas and tannins. At the same time, the 2016 has enough depth to balance things out. Black cherry, plum, leather, espresso, game and licorice meld into the substantial finish. The 2016 is not a perfect wine, but it has a ton of character." —Antonio Galloni

"The Margherita Otto 2016 Barolo (with 3,600 bottles produced) is a firm and tightly knit expression with a solid center of gravity. The wine offers a dark and robust textural fabric with a pretty interlay of dark fruit, dried cherry, plum, licorice, crushed rock and balsam herb. You get the full package of Nebbiolo aromas, presented with elegance grace and careful balance. Thanks to that slightly darker character, I'd pair this pretty Barolo with an autumnal dish served locally that involves white truffles from Alba." —Monica Larner

"Lustrous mid ruby. Savoury, complex minerally cherry fruit with hints of malt, liquorice and chalky notes. Great focus of sappy, juicy cherry fruit on the palate and lined with coating tannins. Great balance and length and just at the beginning of its evolution."

"US ex-pat Alan Manley has worked for - and learned from - some of Barolo’s finest including Luciano Sandrone, Elio Altare and Maria-Teresa Mascarello. His own label, Margherita Otto was officially launched with the 2015 vintage. He favours co-ferments from multiple parcels, long macerations and lengthy ageing in large neutral casks. The 2016 is ripe and rather generous, with a core of sweet cherry and blackberry hemmed in by sturdy, enveloping tannins. Dark soil, smoke and rust nuances add to its appeal."
