Petit Ours, or Little Bear in English, is Matthieu's nickname—bear-like in warmth, though few would consider him small in stature or gravitas. The name also appears on his négociant label, wines that are wildly popular across France for their comforting accessibility and pure fruit-driven expression of Northern Rhône Syrah.

Matthieu selects from younger vines—averaging 30 years old here, older than many industrial vineyards in the region. Grapes are farmed biodynamically by his friend Remi Pouizin on clay and limestone soils in Visan. To avoid trucking fruit during increasingly hot harvests, fermentation happens on-site. Bunches are destemmed into concrete tanks, where the wine matures for 9 months with less than 40 mg total SO2. The result: delicious, juicy, light, and floral—especially in a cooler vintage like 2024.
