Max Kilburg, Riesling Goldtropfchen Spatlese, 2024

Goldtröpfchen — the most famous vineyard name in Piesport — meets the gently sweet Spätlese style under Max Kilburg's deft hand. Max took over his family's historic Weingut Geierslay in Wintrich as a young winemaker, trained at Geisenheim with stints alongside Julian Haart, and rocketed into the upper tier of the Mosel almost overnight. From the steep blue slate of Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, this 2024 Spätlese is clear, pure and crystalline — gleaming Mosel Riesling at modest alcohol, with all that famous Goldtröpfchen perfume of peach pit and wet stone. Slight sweetness keeps the wine pillowy; vivid Mosel acid keeps it flying. It is the kind of off-dry Riesling that converts skeptics in one sip.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A natural with spicy Sichuan, Thai green curry, pork belly bao, smoked trout, blue-cheese tart, foie gras, or fresh fruit with crème fraîche. Also lovely sipped solo on a warm afternoon — that low alcohol invites a second glass.

Tasting Profile

Off-dry and feather-light. White peach, ripe apricot, candied lemon and Granny Smith apple glide over the wet-slate minerality Goldtröpfchen is famous for. Honeyed sweetness is balanced by zinging Mosel acidity, finishing pure, salty and impossibly long.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
