This is Mayacamas as Bob Travers made it: old-school mountain Cabernet from the man whose 1971 was picked for the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Travers bought the estate in 1968 at 30, after a year working with Joe Heitz and mentoring from André Tchelistcheff. He then ran it for forty-five years before handing it to new owners in 2013, so this 2006 comes from his era. His approach to Cabernet left little room for the usual Napa shortcuts. The house picks early to keep acidity. As a rule, Travers-era Cabernets fermented quickly in concrete, then spent two years in large old oak and redwood casks, another year in smaller barrels and two more years in bottle before release. The fruit comes from rocky, volcanic slopes high on Mount Veeder, where the stony ground keeps yields small. If you've had enough of plush, oaky Napa, this is the counterargument, and a chance to taste the estate before the change in ownership.

"The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is shockingly young. Dark and brooding, the 2006 is a big, massively constituted wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to own it for many decades to come. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of savory and earthy notes. Wild black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice and leather develop in the glass adding further layers of complexity. Amazingly, the 2006 still has room to grow." —Antonio Galloni

"Lots of dry elegance in this wine. It's also more acidic than your typical Napa Cabernet, with a tart bite. The tannins are young and forceful, and the finish is totally dry. As presently constituted, it's somewhat tough and lean. But the core of cherries and blackberries suggests some degree of ageabilty. Hold until 2015. "

More about Mayacamas Vineyards

Since the 1950's Mayacamas Vineyards has made a name for themselves in being one of the best producers of California Cabernet - not a small feat! The winery takes a traditional and almost old world approach to all of their wines, preserving the identity and terroir of their mountain fruit (mostly from Mt. Veeder), in order to create wines that are meant to last. Older expressions of their wines are compelling and truly complex, a treat for those who have patience!

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Simply seared dry-aged ribeye, rosemary-and-garlic rack of lamb, or braised short ribs. Add a side of wild mushrooms sautéed in butter and thyme. For cheese, try aged Comté or a well-aged cheddar. Skip heavy cream sauces.

Tasting Profile

Expect old-school mountain Cabernet: blackcurrant and dark cherry with cedar, graphite and dried herbs rather than vanilla or sweet oak. Typically full-bodied but taut, with bright acidity from early picking and firm, dusty tannins, finishing long and savoury. Think classic Bordeaux more than plush modern Napa, and built to age in the house style.
