This is the jewel of the Michel Gros cellar: Clos des Reas, the family's own 1er Cru monopole in Vosne-Romanee, a 200-year-old walled vineyard known for classically fine-boned, gorgeously aromatic wines. Gros is the 6th-generation vigneron here, and his top wine shows everything Vosne is loved for: buoyant red fruit, a velvety texture and beautiful minerality, all wrapped in an elegant translucence. The 2012 was a small, high-quality vintage, and at over a decade old this is entering a lovely mature window with room to keep. A special bottle to decant and savor now or over the next several years.

"The 2012 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Clos des Reas, Michel Gros’s famous monopole to the south of Vosne-Romanee village, has a complex, mineral driven bouquet with black rather than red fruit, touches of gingerbread and marmalade loitering with intent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannins and good purity of fruit. It is harmonious and focused with a gentle build to what feels like a structured, saline finish reminiscent of the sea. This is a very fine Clos des Reas: one of the finest and perhaps overlooked premier crus of the appellation." —Neal Martin
