This white comes from the only Grenache Gris vineyard planted in South Africa, so if you want to try something the rest of the Cape simply isn't making, here it is. The vines are 12 years old and grow in decomposed granite and clay in the Voor-Paardeberg, farmed sustainably. Marelise Niemann got hooked on Grenache in Priorat, where fresh, vibrant wines from old vines won her over, and she came home determined to find Grenache of her own. Momento began with just two barrels while she was still the winemaker at Beaumont in Bot River. Today she works with all three Grenaches: noir, blanc and this rarer gris. The winemaking is hands-off and aimed at texture: the grapes are hand-picked and spend a week on their skins, then ferment with native yeast in older French oak, rest 10 months on the gross lees and go into bottle unfined. If you already like her Grenache Blanc, this is its more unusual sibling and well worth the detour.

Marelise Niemann left her job at another winery to farm Grenache on her own terms. Her Momento project started with two barrels in 2013 and now works Grenache (three varieties), Tinta Barocca, and Chenin-Blanc blends with obsessive care. Small-batch, honest, the kind of South African naturalism that doesn't perform for anyone.

Tasting Profile

Expect a textured, savoury white: ripe pear, yellow apple and stone fruit with hints of dried herbs and a subtle citrus-peel edge. A week on the skins and lees ageing in older oak typically bring a rounder, mid-weight palate with gentle grip, while fresh acidity keeps it lively. Think a more textured Grenache Blanc, finishing dry and gently spicy.
