When Sergio Manetti walked away from the Chianti Classico consortium in 1981, he made a declaration: pure Sangiovese deserved to stand alone. Today his son Martino continues the vision at this 11th-century hilltop estate. Pian del Ciampolo—primarily Sangiovese with traditional Canaiolo and Colorino—comes from a 1.5-hectare east-northeast parcel. Concrete fermentation, 12 months in Slavonian oak. Ruby red with cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry, subtle spice, lively acidity, and silky tannins. The entry-level expression of an uncompromising estate. Ready now through 2031.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Pian del Ciampolo is terrific. Rich and layered in the glass, Pian del Ciampolo is an undeniable success in 2023. It offers fantastic depth and presence but no heaviness. Macerated red cherry, mint, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and cinnamon are some of the many nuances that meld together. Pliant, silky tannins wrap it all up in style. A closing flourish of floral overtones invites a second taste." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The overperforming entry-level wine from Montevertine is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino. The 2023 Pian del Ciampolo is a pretty wine with a vinous character and aromas of wild cherry and a hint of white pepper or something spicy like dried ginger. I also get floral notes with iris and violet. It shows lively qualities that add vibrancy and energy. It's very primary in character but not too ripe. It spreads over the palate in a subtle, silky manner. Winemaking is straightforward, with cement for fermentation and botte for aging." —Monica Larner

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

Composed of Sangiovese with tiny amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino blended in, this is the basic red wine of the estate. It sees 18 months of aging in large barrel. The 1.5 hectare vineyard parcel was re-planted in 2003; the vineyards face east northeast which produces a long growing season resulting in the complete maturation of the grapes and exceptional balance to this wine which reflects the classic Montevertine style marked by elegance and complexity.
