The secret's out on Nervi-Conterno, the historic Alto Piemonte estate that Roberto Conterno of Barolo fame took over and elevated to cult status. Gattinara is Nebbiolo grown on volcanic, iron-rich soils in the hills of northern Piedmont, and it gives a more aromatic, mineral, high-toned take on the grape than its famous Langhe cousins. The 2016 is a standout, classically structured vintage across Piedmont, with the freshness and tannic spine to age well. Conterno's hand brings precision and depth here, making this one of the most exciting addresses in a region that's having a real moment. After buying 90% of the 1906 Nervi estate in 2018, Roberto (of the legendary Giacomo Conterno) invested in a beautiful new cellar and the promise to preserve the house style. The result is wines from historic crus (Molsino, Valferana, dating back to the 1200s) that sing with fresh Nebbiolo character—a Barolo sibling worth your attention.
