Conciso is Niepoort's take on a fine, elegant Dão, made to show what a very old vineyard can do. Niepoort describes the source as a century-old vineyard, facing east at 600 metres on the granite slopes of the Serra da Estrela. Baga and Jaen grow there side by side (Jaen is the same grape Spain calls Mencía). Home base is Quinta da Lomba, a 200-year-old estate that Dirk Niepoort and Sérgio Silva bought in 2014. António Mendes, the third generation of his family to work there, stayed on. The house makes Conciso the old way: fermentation in granite lagares, then ageing in used wooden barrels. Their view is that the granite gives the wines energy and lift, while the old vines and continental climate add concentration and perfume. With a decade in bottle, this 2014 is a rare chance to see how an old-vine Dão built around freshness ages. If you love Mencía from Bierzo or Ribeira Sacra, this is a cousin across the border worth getting to know.

More about Niepoort

One of the last family-owned Port houses standing, Niepoort has been in the Niepoort family since 1842. Dirk Niepoort is the fifth generation of his family making Port—he cut his first vintage back in 1987—and now his son Daniel has joined to mark generation six. But Niepoort isn't resting on Port laurels; they're making unfortified table wines across multiple Portuguese regions, blending old-world Port tradition with new-world ambition. When a house can claim nearly two centuries and still feel alive, that's something.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Arroz de pato (Portuguese duck rice), roast kid or lamb with garlic and rosemary, grilled pork secretos, wild mushroom risotto, roast quail.

Tasting Profile

Expect the fine, fresh side of Dão: red cherry, wild berries and dried herbs, with the floral, peppery lift of Jaen (the grape Spain calls Mencía) and a savoury, earthy edge from Baga. Typically medium-bodied, with bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. Old wood keeps oak in the background, so fruit and freshness lead into a dry, lingering finish.
