This same walled vineyard—Clos Saint Jean—makes red wine too, and it speaks an entirely different language. One hundred percent Pinot Noir from 55+ year vines, aged with 50% whole cluster and 15% new oak, this red finds that rare balance between power and elegance. Where the white is seductive and full, the red is structured and mineral, a wine built for the dinner table and for aging. One of the top sites in Chassagne for Pinot Noir, it proves that medieval walls held secrets about both colors.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 1er Cru (Rouge) has a lovely bouquet of redcurrant and cranberry scents, and a little more complexity than the Vieilles Vignes. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannins and fine grip, and the 70% whole cluster imparts a light pepperiness on the finish. Very fine." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Pillot produces one of the village's finest red wines, lavishing his old vines in this climat with labor-intensive "tressage" (whereby the vines' apical shoots are never cut), and his 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean Rouge is a great success. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, orange zest, exotic spices and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and lively, with a deep core of fruit and fine structuring tannins." —William Kelley

More about Paul Pillot

Domaine Paul Pillot was founded in 1900 by Jean-Baptiste Pillot, a barrel maker who decided vines were his real calling. Paul took over in 1968, expanded into premier cru sites, and his son Thierry joined in 1999, taking over full-time in 2004. Now Thierry and sister Chrystelle are among the most exciting winemakers in Burgundy, running 13 hectares (4.5 red), farming organically, making restrained, minerally wines. They're the new stars of Saint-Aubin and Santenay.
