Red clays of Les Grandes Terres, warmer Santenay-side soils, 50+ year vines—this village-level Chassagne rouge trades the Premier Cru precision for something more approachable: pomegranate, blackberry, violet, ground coffee, dark chocolate all arriving with silky ease. Light-bodied but balanced, this is the wine that makes you understand why Pillot's cellars fill with devoted customers. Not a shy wine, but a refined one—proof that village-level doesn't mean village-simple.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is the usual blend of two parcels. With juicy ripe black cherries and mulberry scents on the nose, this is not complex but there is purity in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy entry, black pepper and a touch of graphite, though just a little dry on the finish. Give it a year in bottle." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge offers up aromas of raspberries, cherries and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, impressively concentrated palate framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a saline finish. This is a strong effort from one of the appellation's best exponents." —William Kelley

More about Paul Pillot

Domaine Paul Pillot was founded in 1900 by Jean-Baptiste Pillot, a barrel maker who decided vines were his real calling. Paul took over in 1968, expanded into premier cru sites, and his son Thierry joined in 1999, taking over full-time in 2004. Now Thierry and sister Chrystelle are among the most exciting winemakers in Burgundy, running 13 hectares (4.5 red), farming organically, making restrained, minerally wines. They're the new stars of Saint-Aubin and Santenay.
