Sonoma Coast Pinot from a hilltop perched four miles from the Pacific, now nine years on and showing the depth that Peay's cool corner reliably delivers. Vanessa Wong — winemaker since the estate's founding, with a CV that runs through Peter Michael, Lafite, and Domaine Jean Gros — turns out an appellation-level Pinot built from the same 53-acre estate that produces their single-vineyard bottlings. The 2017 vintage was famously warm at the start and cooled through harvest, and at this stage the wine has the secondary-character development that defines Pinot Noir's most rewarding window: less primary fruit, more forest floor, dried flower, and savory undertow. A serious bottle from one of the West Sonoma Coast's defining producers, drinking beautifully now.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a stellar appellation-level wine from Peay. Light on its feet, perfumed and super-expressive, it has much to offer. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and spice all develop in the glass. This is a very serious, appellation-level wine done entirely from estate fruit. Don't miss it." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast comes from 100% estate fruit this vintage. Pale to medium ruby-purple, the nose is broody with iron, iodine, forest floor and blood orange with cranberry and blackberry fruit. Light to medium-bodied, it's ultra silky and a maintains a nice balance of ripe fruit, bitters and earth, with classic tea leaf and citrus peel flavors and a long, juicy, uplifted finish. 1,250 cases produced." —Erin Brooks

More about Peay Vineyards

Vanessa Wong left Peter Michael Winery in 2001 to start Peay Vineyards with her husband Nick (and brother Andy handling business). Their 53-acre hilltop vineyard sits in the far northwestern corner of West Sonoma Coast, four miles from the Pacific, at Sea Ranch. 34 acres of Pinot Noir, eight of Syrah, seven of Chardonnay, plus Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne. Certified organic, serious about complexity, aging-worthy. Wong's resume (Lafite-Rothschild, Jean Gros, Hirsch) says everything about the level.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck with cherry-thyme reduction, mushroom risotto with parmesan, pork tenderloin with five-spice glaze, or a soft-rind cow's-milk cheese with toasted walnuts and a smear of honey.

Tasting Profile

Cranberry, dried cherry, forest floor, sandalwood, dried rose petal, and a whisper of clove. Medium-bodied, silky tannins, bright Sonoma Coast acidity, and the savory secondary character that mature Pinot delivers when it hits its window.
