A bottle older than most Italian wine collections themselves: Carema from 1958, alpine Nebbiolo grown on the steep, terraced pergolas of Piedmont's far north. Carema is a tiny appellation near the Valle d'Aosta where mountain viticulture produces Nebbiolo that is high-toned, mineral, and ethereal rather than powerful. The Produttori cooperative has been the guardian of this heroic tradition since 1960. At well over sixty years old, this is a deeply mature back-vintage from a private collection, a wine to be approached as a rare historical artifact rather than an everyday pour. Expect fragility and faded beauty; decant with great care and drink the moment it's open.
