Heroic mountain Nebbiolo, the youngest and most approachable of the Carema bottlings on offer here. Carema sits in the far north of Piedmont, where Nebbiolo grows on steep, terraced pergolas supported by characteristic stone columns, producing wines that are lighter, higher-toned, and more mineral than Barolo or Barbaresco. The Produttori cooperative, founded in 1960, has championed this dramatic style of viticulture for decades. As the Riserva, this 2009 saw extended aging before release and now carries lovely bottle maturity while still having plenty of life ahead. A perfect introduction to one of Italy's most singular Nebbiolo terroirs.
