Remi Leroy, Champagne Brut Nature (2022 Base), NV

Cote des Bar grower Champagne at its most transparent. Remi Leroy returned home to Meurville in 2006 after a Bordeaux oenology degree and now farms 9.5 hectares spread across Meurville, Bergeres, and Fontaine, all on the Kimmeridgian limestone that defines the southern Aube. This Brut Nature is his non-vintage blend disgorged with zero dosage: 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 10% Meunier, the 2022 vintage as base. Each parcel is pressed on a Coquard PAI, fermented separately in steel or oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. With no sugar added at disgorgement, you taste the wine itself: chalky Aube Pinot fruit, brioche from lees, and a long, savory finish. Champagne for people who want the place, not the makeup.

More about Remi Leroy

Rémi Leroy earned his oenology degree in Bordeaux in 2006, then came home to Meurville in the Côte des Bar to make wine from his family's vines. He farms about 9.5 hectares on Kimmeridgian soils, organic in practice, keeping his best parcels for his own label. Pinot Noir leads, with Chardonnay and a little Meunier, and old barrels, lees aging and no fining or filtration give vinous, expressive Champagne. In his words: more than Champagne, Champagne wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

An aperitif that doesn't quit. Pour with oysters on the half shell, salt-cod brandade, a roast chicken thigh, or aged Comte. The cut of zero dosage also handles ramen, fried chicken, and anything with a hit of vinegar.

Tasting Profile

Pinot-led and chalky, with green apple, citrus pith, brioche, and a brush of toasted hazelnut from lees aging. Bone-dry, taut, and savory on the finish, with the bright Aube acidity holding everything in place.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
