A Côte-Rôtie master's take on southern Syrah — and the rare Languedoc red that tastes cool rather than sunbaked. In the late 1990s René Rostaing and his wife bought a property in the Coteaux du Languedoc near Nîmes, originally called Puech Chaud and now known as Puech Noble, chasing something he couldn't get at home: Syrah on limestone. The estate sits on a small plateau carpeted in galets roulés, the rounded stones you find in parts of Châteauneuf-du-Pape — except this plateau sits 150 meters higher, which makes it markedly cooler and gives the wines a freshness the Rhône Valley floor can't match. Small amounts of Mourvèdre and Grenache round out the plantings. The Rostaing name is better known for Côte Blonde and La Landonne, which is precisely why this bottle overdelivers: same hands, same restraint, a fraction of the fuss.

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.

Tasting Profile

Dark berry and black cherry fruit with a peppery, garrigue-herb lift and a faint smoky edge. Medium to full bodied, dry, with firm but fine tannins and enough acidity to keep it lively rather than heavy. The finish is savory and stony.
