Roagna is one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists, crafting wines with long macerations, extended aging, and an unwavering commitment to terroir expression. Barolo Pira 2019 comes from a historic cru in Castiglione Falletto, where limestone-rich soils give Nebbiolo both power and elegance. The 2019 vintage, a classically structured year, highlights Roagna’s signature restraint and depth, making for a wine of remarkable aging potential.

Wild strawberry, red cherry, and blood orange lead the aromatics, layered with dried roses, anise, and a hint of truffle. The tannins are firm yet exceptionally fine-grained, providing structure without overwhelming the wine’s purity. Compared to Roagna’s Barbaresco bottlings, Pira is darker and more structured, yet it maintains the producer’s signature finesse, with a long, chiseled finish that promises decades of evolution.

A perfect match for braised meats, truffle-infused risottos, or aged cheeses, this 2019 Pira demands patience. Decant if drinking young, but the real rewards will come with 15–30 years of aging. A profound, cellar-worthy Barolo from a true master of tradition.

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Barolo Pira is powerful and deep but also very closed. There's so much energy here but readers will have to be patient as this classically austere young Barolo clearly needs time. Hints of pine menthol licorice and dried herbs appear with some reluctance. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Superb." -Vinous

WS 96
"A distinctive white pepper aroma leads off followed by flavors of strawberry sour cherry mint menthol and iron. Despite the lightness and ethereal quality the texture reveals viscosity and intensity. Balanced and complex ending with terrific length."

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
Sourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. It is a monopole vineyard and is the largest parcel owned by the Roagna family at 4.88 hectares.
Orientation
Southeast.
Soil
There are 6 unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain which ranges from limestone marl Roca to blue stone.
Viticulture
The vines for this wine are between 25 and 50 years of age.
Vinification
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 60-75 days.
Aging
The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
