More about Roagna

Luca Roagna is the fifth generation in a family that's been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1850s. His Dolcetto comes from vines over 45 years old, fermented with real patience and aged in neutral oak. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why everyone doesn't make Dolcetto this seriously.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VINEYARDSourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. It is a monopole vineyard and is the largest parcel owned by the Roagna family at 4.88 hectares.SOILThere are 6 unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain which ranges from limestone marl Roca to blue stone.VITICULTUREThe vines for this wine are over 50 years old.. The youngest vines for this wine date back to 1937.VINIFICATIONFermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 70-90 days.AGINGThe wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

beef stew, braised short ribs, roasted pork shoulder, wild mushroom risotto, aged cheeses

Tasting Profile

Aged Barolo Pira VV with secondary tobacco, leather, and plum notes. Full body with integrated tannins, evolved complexity, and a long, sophisticated finish.

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The bio-sphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.
