"Five Oaks"—named for the trees growing beside this vineyard in Montemarano, Avellino. Salvatore Molettieri founded his winery in 1983 after four generations of family grape-growing. Won first place at Montemarano Wine Festival four consecutive years (1985-1988). 13 hectares at 500-550 meters on clayey-limestone soil with volcanic lapilli. Four sons now help: Giovanni, the eldest, serves as enologist and agronomist. This Irpinia Aglianico is their "baby Taurasi"—24 months in barriques and large oak.

"The 2021 Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce is deeply alluring with an almost feral bouquet of ash, embers, animal musk and mentholated herbs. It’s silken in feel and decidedly savory with citrus-tinged blackberry fruit and saline mineral tones. The long and structured finish leaves a pleasant chewiness and hints of blood orange to fade slowly. While labeled as an Irpinia Aglianico, the 2021 performs like a baby Taurasi. More about Salvatore Molettieri

Salvatore Molettieri founded his Taurasi winery in 1983 and turned it into the reference point for Aglianico. His four sons joined him, making these powerful, elegant wines from the Cinque Querce vineyard. The intro Taurasi spends four years in large oak casks and French barriques. Reserve expressions go longer. This is southern Italian viticulture treated with absolute seriousness—tannic, minerally, age-worthy Aglianico at its best.
