Thomas Haag, son of legendary Wilhelm Haag at the Fritz Haag estate, took over Schloss Lieser in 1997—a striking Neo-Renaissance castle built in 1875 in the heart of Middle Mosel. He works exclusively in the Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) Lieser Niederberg Helden on extremely steep hills of decomposed slate, growing only Riesling. Spontaneous fermentation (ambient yeast) is essential to Mosel Riesling style. Schloss Lieser enjoys topmost ratings in German wine guides; Vinum Weinguide Deutschland rates only two estates in Greater Mosel five stars: Schloss Lieser and Egon Müller. This 2023 Juffer Sonnenuhr Spätlese shows the site's honeyed character, bright acidity, and the mineral precision of slate-rooted Riesling. Ready now or age 12-15 years.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2023 Riesling Brauneberger Juffer Auslese, made without botrytis, offers candied lemon and crushed yarrow on the nose. That candied lemon notion, with its fluid compact smoothness, takes over on the elegant flowing palate. A touch of candied orange colors the aromas with even more ripeness. This wine is beautifully concentrated, tingling with zestiness yet so supple and elegant." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Lieser

Schloss Lieser is a 175-year-old Neo-Renaissance castle on the Mosel where Thomas Haag has quietly become one of Germany's greatest Riesling makers. Spontaneous fermentations with natural yeasts, half stainless steel and half traditional barrels, minimal intervention. They farm Grand Cru slopes and make wines that taste like specific places—Lieserer Niederberg Helden, Brauneberger Juffer. This is Mosel Riesling done the difficult, rewarding way.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
