Premier-cru-quality Gevrey from a family domaine that quietly farms about ten acres of old vines and only began bottling its own label in 1988. The Clos Prieur sits on the southern side of the village near Mazis-Chambertin, on limestone-and-clay soils that give a firm, savory style of Pinot Noir. 2012 was a small, frost- and hail-reduced Burgundy vintage that concentrated what little fruit survived into wines of real density. Frederic works alongside his parents, Andre and Michele, in a traditional, hands-on register. Now well over a decade old, this is mature Gevrey ready to drink, with a decant.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Good bright, dark red. Rather delicate aromas of blueberry and violet. Spicy and youthfully imploded, showing excellent juicy energy to the subtle flavors of raspberry, red cherry and underbrush. A step up in material and energy from the basic village bottling. Here the firm tannins are sweeter." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

88 points

"The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur comes from several parcels totaling around half a hectare. It has a ripe candied bouquet with lifted kirsch and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with soft and fluffy red cherries and smudged strawberry with a smooth and rounded easy-drinking finish. This will make fine early drinking." —Neal Martin
