Marco de Grazia—one of the original "Barolo Boys"—acquired 45 hectares on Mount Etna in 2000 and began bottling in 2002. Le Vigne Niche Montalto comes from 60-90 year old vines at 900-950 meters elevation on volcanic ash soils—one of the highest sites in the Etna DOC. 70% Carricante, 20% Catarratto, 5% Grecanico, 5% Inzolia. Organic certified since 2010. The dramatic day-night temperature swings at this altitude produce wine with fine elegance rather than heat. Etna's Burgundy.

More about Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Etna's obsession with geological purity finds its greatest expression at Terre Nere. Marc de Grazia didn't stumble onto this corner of Sicily in 2002—he engineered a masterclass in what happens when you let the volcano speak. Nearly 50 hectares of volcanic terroir, farmed with a reverence for old traditions, yielding Nerello Mascalese with an ethereal intensity that towers above most modern Italian reds. This is the wine that changed Etna from curiosity to command.
