Rocche di Castiglione is one of the crus that invented the idea of cru Barolo, and Vietti got there first: Alfredo Currado bottled the 1961 as a single vineyard, among the very first Barolos ever labeled by site. Only a tiny handful of estates bottle Rocche at all — Brovia, Oddero from a sliver at the Monforte line, and Vietti — which makes this one of the more sought-after addresses in Castiglione Falletto. The vines are old, planted across 1940, 1950 and 1968 with a southern exposure at about 330 meters, and they give the perfumed, finely structured style Rocche is known for rather than sheer muscle. Fermentation runs about three weeks in stainless steel on the skins, with a cold soak up front and a traditional submerged-cap maceration after, then malolactic in wood and roughly 30 months in oak. The 2020 sits inside the era of the estate's certified-organic farming, which began with the 2019 vintage on Vietti's own vineyards. A classic Barolo for the cellar, and a benchmark for what this cru can do.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The Vietti 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a very delineated wine with sharp ferrous notes, cherry cola, redcurrant and chalky mineral. It is extremely precise in terms of its aromas. The effect is direct and layered, showing different sides and increasing complexity as it opens in the glass. Dried floral notes, purple flower and iris also appear delicately. The chalky tannins feel abrupt at this young stage, but this wine is built to last nonetheless. Only 3,512 bottles were created." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

95 points

"A dense, solidly built version, whose core of cherry and raspberry fruit is accented by iron, wild herb and juniper notes. Focused by vibrant acidity and underlined with chalky tannins, this red is long and detailed on the finish."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Vibrant raspberries and juicy red fruits take the lead, creating a lush and fleshy palate that's impossible to resist. But wait, there's more! A surprise twist of herbs and mixed spices keeps things interesting, adding depth and complexity to the fruity core. It's like a blockbuster movie with a plot that keeps you guessing – thrilling, entertaining, and always leaving you wanting more. Drink Now - 2035."

More about Vietti

One of the great names from Barolo, Vietti has been a pioneering force in Piedmont for decades, going back to the 1961 Rocche, one of the first single-vineyard designated bottles ever. The Rocche, and other single Cru wines from outside Castiglione, are among the most sought-after Barolo being made today.

Vietti also makes a Barolo normale called Castiglione, which confusingly is made mostly with fruit from Ravera, in the village of Novello, rather than Castiglione. It’s a good wine to stock up on just about every vintage. The style at Vietti is neither particularly traditional or particularly modern: a down-the-middle approach that is focused primarily on quality and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and white truffle, agnolotti del plin, roast guinea fowl or squab, aged Castelmagno and Bra Duro.

Tasting Profile

Nebbiolo in its classic register: dried rose, red cherry, tar and tobacco, with an earthy, savory edge. Medium-bodied, bright acidity, firm fine-grained tannins and a long finish. Young and tight now — decant, or give it years in the cellar.
