The Sonnenlay is often the most elegant of Weiser-Künstler's Kabinetts, and it comes from a vineyard that is one of Alexandra Künstler's own favourites. It's shaped like a classic Middle Mosel Kabinett: off-dry, crisp and light on its feet, with nothing showy about it. Wolfer Sonnenlay is one of the estate's steep slate sites. The couple credit its climate for their wines: on hot days the dark slate soaks up heat and gives it back into the evening, and at night cold winds blow down from the forests. Alexandra and her husband Konstantin Weiser farm organically and do everything by hand, and 2025 is their 20th-anniversary vintage, twenty years after they started in 2005. The year is a little easier and more perfumed than usual but keeps the house purity, and the Kabinett-and-up wines are its highlight, though not much was made. If their wines have seemed austere to you before, this is a friendly way in, and the price is remarkably fair for farming this hard.

"Tasted as a sample, the 2025 Wolfer Sonnenlay Kabinett is intense and savory on the saline and lemon zesty but also grapey nose that indicates lush and sensual yellow fruit. Fermented in fuder and aged on the fine lees in stainless steel to keep the wine lean and elegant, this is a mouth-filling, voluptuous and refined, weightless and finessed Sonnenlay with a long, saline, savory and crystalline finish that is still closed by the reductive milieu. It is very promising, though. About 8% of alcohol with just below 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted at the domaine in March 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai larb or green papaya salad with chili heat; Sichuan dan dan noodles; smoked trout on rye with horseradish cream; pork schnitzel with apple and lingonberry; crab cakes with a touch of sweet chili.

Tasting Profile

Off-dry and crisp, in the classic Mosel Kabinett shape. Expect a hint of sweetness balanced by bright acidity, with an elegant, delicate frame rather than a heavy one. The 2025 vintage brings a little more fruit and perfume than usual while staying pure. Like the house's other wines, it should reward some time in the cellar.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
