Blanc de Blancs from the Montagne de Reims sounds like a contradiction, because this is Pinot Noir country. That's exactly why Villers-Marmery is worth knowing: it's a 1er Cru island of Chardonnay surrounded by Pinot, and it's home to the Margaine family's vines. The Margaines farm a Chardonnay clone that's specific to the area and found nowhere else in Champagne, planted on chalk and clay. The Spécial Club is their purest statement of it: one grape, one village, one vintage. The 2018 skipped malolactic fermentation, was fermented partly in oak barrels and partly in steel, spent 66 months on its lees, and was finished with a moderate 8 g/L dosage. Nothing about that is a shortcut, and it makes this a grower Champagne built for depth and tension rather than flash. It also has a nice bit of timing: 2018 is the year Mathilde Margaine came home to work alongside her father, Arnaud. She is the fifth generation to run the estate, and the first woman. If you want an insider's alternative to the big-house prestige bottlings, this is it.

More about A Margaine

Mathilde Margaine is the fifth generation and first woman to lead the family domaine in Villers-Marmery—basically the Chardonnay island in a sea of Pinot Noir. Her family started making wine in 1796 (yes, 1796) and today she and her dad work just 6.5 hectares with obsessive care: blocked malolactic fermentations to preserve brightness, precise plot-by-plot work, and a "Special Club" membership since 1976. These are wines that taste refreshingly pure, not trying to show off.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, chalk-driven Blanc de Blancs: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with the brioche and toasted-nut notes of long lees ageing and a subtle roundness from partial barrel fermentation. Skipping malolactic keeps the acidity bright and the mousse fine. Think of a sparkling Chablis with more depth, finishing dry, saline and long.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
