More about Pierre Moncuit

Pierre Moncuit makes chiseled, chalky Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Côte des Blancs Grand Cru village behind Salon and Krug's Clos du Mesnil, and has done so for decades without much fanfare.

The family has grown vines in Le Mesnil since 1889, and Pierre Moncuit began bottling under his own name in 1928. His daughter Nicole took charge of the vineyards and cellar in 1977, while her brother Yves handled the business side, and Nicole's daughter Valérie has since joined her in running the house. The holdings are almost all Chardonnay, mostly in Le Mesnil, with many vines over fifty years old and some approaching a century, plus a parcel in the Sézanne area further south.

The range is short. Hugues de Coulmet, which blends Sézanne and Le Mesnil fruit, is the easygoing entry point. The Pierre Moncuit-Delos Grand Cru, named for Pierre and his wife, is the flagship, made in Brut and Extra Brut. Above those come vintage Grand Crus, the old-vine Cuvée Nicole from top years, and the Henriette rosé, the one wine with a little Pinot Noir. Dosage is low across the board, and the house style is pure, saline and fine, built to age.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
