Austria isn't the first place you'd look for serious Chardonnay, which is exactly why this one is such a happy surprise. Lores is a cool single vineyard in Tattendorf, planted to Burgundian clones on black earth and gravel, and it's where the Reinisch family makes their most ambitious white. It's fermented and aged in lightly toasted barrels and rests about ten months on its lees, which lends a creamy, saline texture without ever tipping into heaviness. 'Ried' marks it as a named single vineyard, the estate's top tier. Bring it to a dinner and let people guess where it's from.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2022 Chardonnay Ried Lores, grown on limestone with chernozem cover at 220 meters of elevation, is the lowest-lying of the Reinisch family's vineyards. The vines were planted in 1987 to Clone 95. This was fermented half in new and half in second-use small, mostly French barrels with a smaller proportion of Austrian oak. The nose is an elegant union of smoke, lemon and roasted hazelnut against a backdrop of chalk. The palate is superbly precise and wonderfully contoured with incisive lemon and chalky notes. This has power but also much fluidity, drive and wonderful length."

Wine Enthusiast

90 points

"Rich and expressive, with notes of salted butter, toasted bread, and vanilla framing a core of apple and citrus. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, showing creamy texture and bright acidity. Approachable yet layered, offering charm for fans of an oak-influenced style." —Aleks Zecevic

More about Familie Reinisch

If you think great Pinot Noir has to come from Burgundy, the Reinisch family would like a word. They work in the Thermenregion, the strip of limestone-rich vineyards just south of Vienna where the Alps run out, and they have made a serious case for Austrian Pinot Noir and its moody local cousin, Sankt Laurent.

The estate (also known as Johanneshof Reinisch) was founded in 1923 with half a hectare of vines and is now run by the fourth generation: brothers Johannes, who makes the wines, Christian and Michael. Their 40 hectares are split between two very different villages. On the valley floor at Tattendorf the soils are loose, alluvial and chalky; up in the hills of Gumpoldskirchen, above 350 meters, the vines sit on fossil-bearing limestone. The brothers converted to organic farming in 2004 and were certified in 2010.

Pinot Noir ages in French oak from a range of cooperages, with the share of whole clusters changing by vintage. The range climbs from friendly Estate bottlings to single-vineyard (Ried) wines such as the Holzspur Pinot Noir and Lores Chardonnay, plus an old-vine Gumpoldskirchen Pinot. And don't overlook the local white grapes: Rotgipfler, rarely grown anywhere but here, is a genuine discovery.
