Empreinte means "imprint" or "fingerprint"—an apt name for this deeply personal expression of Chenin Blanc from natural wine pioneer Benoît Courault. From organically farmed vines in Anjou, fermented and aged with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention, this captures the essence of Loire Chenin: tensile acidity, orchard fruit, and a saline minerality from the schist terroir. Benoit Courault practiced biodynamics and horse-plowing before most people knew what those words meant. After three years at Domaine de L'Anglore in Tavel, he bought a 6-hectare estate in Faye d'Anjou with his wife and committed to biodynamic farming on schist soil. His La Grande Maille—old-vine Cabernet Franc—ferments naturally and ages in barrel without racking. It's Loire wildness, properly handled.
