One of Oregon's most historic estates makes one of its most thrilling Chardonnays. Bethel Heights was founded in 1977 by the Casteel brothers in the Eola-Amity Hills — now under second-generation winemaker Ben Casteel — and the Casteel Chardonnay is the family's flagship: a vintage-selected bottling drawn from the oldest blocks (planted in 1977) and adjacent 1994 plantings. The 2021 captures a warm year tempered by Eola's signature coastal-gap winds: opulent yet taut, with lemon peel, panna cotta, honeyed spice, and a streak of flint running through. Medium-bodied, satiny, with deep concentration and focused acidity. Oregon Chardonnay at the very top of its game.

"Sweetly seductive, the 2021 Chardonnay Casteel blossoms with a gorgeous blend of mint leaf and vanilla custard, complementing freshly sliced nectarines. It smooths over the palate with ripe, mineral-tinged orchard fruits, maintaining fabulous energy. The 2021 leaves a salty flourish and hint of sour lime, finishing long and lightly structured. The balance within is stunning and will promote a long and steady evolution." —Eric Guido

"The 2021 Chardonnay Casteel is complex and alluring, offering dynamic aromas and flavors as it unfurls with oxygen over several days. The nose offers lemon peel and panna cotta, spicy, honeyed undertones and streaks of flint. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and expansive with impressively concentrated, slightly exotic fruit driven by focused acidity, and just enough smoky reduction adds even more complexity to its generous fruit. Year after year, the Casteel is one of the best Chardonnays coming out of Oregon, and this 2021 is especially gorgeous!" —Erin Brooks

"A gorgeous Chardonnay from estates vines planted in 1977 and 1994. This is a showy wine that retains its elegance while flirting with opulence. Lemon cream, nutmeg and petrichor announce the aromatics alongside a touch of ginger. The palate is impressive. Smoky flint leads into lanolin, almond cream, cardamom, baked apple and just a hint of cheese rind. This beautiful wine comes together wonderfully, showing just how impressive Willamette Valley Chardonnay can be."

"Rich and polished, with multilayered flavors of lemon tart and apple that take on caramel, orange blossom and spice hints on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2023."

"The Casteel's aromatic combination of papaya, blood orange and macadamia nuts is almost as good as a nice suntan. Then a wave of pineapple, lime and orange sorbet flavors calls out for a cry of "cowabunga." Zingy acidity of the puckering variety keeps things lively." —Michael Alberty

More about Bethel Heights

There's a reason the Willamette Valley has become synonymous with Pinot Noir produced in the United States, and Bethel Heights makes some of the best-- not to mention incredible Chardonnays as well!

In 1977 the Casteel family bought 75 acres of promising looking land northwest of Salem, which has now grown to over 100 acres. Since their first commercial vintage in 1984 the wine has always been produced by the Casteel family, with patriarch Terry at the helm until 2006, when his son Ben took over as winemaker.

The land has been the family's home for nearly 40 years and they treat it with the love and respect you'd expect: they are certified sustainable and on the forefront of the Willamette's eco-friendly practices.

This commitment to the land, in conjunction with the perfectly suited terroir, results in some spectacular wines (both red and white). The Casteels pride themselves on terroir-driven wines, and in fact all but one of the Pinots they produce are named after a place. This is also the reason they grow Chardonnay: it expresses the terroir perfectly.
