Domaine de Sulauze is more than just a winery—it’s a fully biodynamic farm, where vines grow alongside olive trees, grains, and grazing animals in a closed-loop ecosystem. Owners Karina and Guillaume Lefèvre are firm believers in minimal intervention, crafting wines that speak purely of their Mediterranean home. Charbonnières Rouge is a blend of Grenache and Syrah, made naturally, with native yeasts and no additives, allowing the land to shine through.

This is the kind of red that feels alive in the glass. There's a rustic edge, a whisper of wild herbs carried on the Mistral wind, and a vibrancy that comes from the estate’s limestone soils. Unlike heavier Rhône blends, Charbonnières has an effortless drinkability—perfect for a long lunch with crusty bread, good cheese, and whatever’s coming off the grill. Serve it slightly cool, and let it transport you straight to Provence.

More about Domaine de Sulauze

Karina and Guillaume Lefèvre bought this 29-hectare Provence estate in 2004 after Coup de Foudre and converted to organic then biodynamic viticulture. Their flagship Pomponette rosé is fermented with indigenous yeast from a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Vermentino. It tastes like a trip to the Côte d'Azur in a glass—crisp, mineral, alive with sea salt.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Varietal Notes70% Grenache, 30% SyrahBiodynamicCertifiedVineyardFrom young vines of Grenache and Syrah sourced from a single vineyard.SoilMix of clay and sandstone over a limestone bedrock.ViticultureVineyards are farmed biodynamically and are Demeter certified. Grapes are hand harvested.VinificationThe most beautiful grapes from the first pass (whole cluster) are placed in concrete tank. The second pass is direct press and poured over the whole clusters. It’s a sort of carbonic maceration (often called infusion). 15 day cool maceration, wild yeast fermentation and very low doses of SO2 (volcanic sulfur) are added only before bottling.AgingGrenache is aged in concrete egg and Syrah is aged in demi-muids. The wine is bottled in March without filtration.

Tasting Profile

Darker-skinned Vin de France showing plum, cassis, herbs de Provence, and earthy minerality. Medium tannins, good acidity, peppery finish.

We take you to a farm house near Aix-en-Provence. Here you will find a warm and inviting couple, Karina and Guillaume Lefèvre. They grow or raise all the food they eat on their own land. They like to drink beer so that they make that as well (it's delicious).

And they grow grapes. Of course, they work organically (certified) and traditionally, also employing many biodynamic techniques. The grow all our favorite Provençal grapes, including Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.
