A monopole 1er Cru from one of Burgundy's most worshipped addresses. Domaine Georges Roumier farms this 2.6-hectare Clos de la Bussiere at the southern edge of Morey-Saint-Denis, the only owner of the site. Its iron-rich clay-limestone soils give a fleshier, more powerful style than Roumier's airy Chambolle wines, with real depth and grip. The 2016 was a small, frost-reduced vintage but produced wines of charm and balance, and this is approachable now while rewarding several more years in the cellar. A rare bottle from a domaine whose wines are nearly impossible to find.

Burghound

"A deft application of wood sets off pretty, pure, elegant and airy aromas of both red and dark pinot fruit that are cut with varying degrees of earth, floral and spice wisps plus an interesting hint of orange peel. The rich, sleek and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors also flash good minerality, all wrapped in a firm and serious but not especially austere finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth."

"The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière almost seemed to relish being unaffected by the frost. A soupçon of schadenfreude perchance? It delivers a joyous, well-defined and concentrated bouquet with a mixture of black and blue fruit, almost Chambolle-like thanks to its richness. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, and there is superb density here. It feels lively and tensile without compromising the backbone one expects from this vineyard: layers of black fruit tinged with graphite toward the finish. It is almost as if this Morey is rubbing in the fact that its Chambolle stablemates suffered so much during the growing season. This ranks alongside the stupendous 2015 last year." —Neal Martin

Decanter

92 points

"This year’s Clos de la Bussière, which may be the most underrated wine in this coveted producer’s cellar, is superb. It reveals a lovely bouquet of cherry, plum, potpourri and incipient notes of loamy soil, while on the palate the wine is full-bodied, plush and generous, with good concentration, a bright core of fruit and well-integrated, fine-grained tannins. With a decade of bottle age this will really shine. Drinking Window 2026 - 2045."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A pure red, saturated with black cherry, black currant, violet, spice and mineral notes, showing a dense, almost chunky feel. A beam of vivid acidity cuts through, adding grace and focusing the flavors. Fine length. Best from 2022 through 2037."

More about Domaine Georges Roumier

In Chambolle-Musigny, Roumier makes Pinot Noir that reminds you why Burgundy matters. These are reds with silk in their backbone, elegance in their structure, and the kind of complexity that unfolds over time in the glass and in the cellar. The domaine has been selling to the U.S. since the late 1920s through visionary importer Frank Schoonmaker. Sold through the best importers for a reason—this is the Côte de Nuits at its most refined and unforgettable.
