The Mugneret-Gibourg sisters hold two precious parcels in Echézeaux Grand Cru: one in Les Rouges du Bas, acquired in 1934, and one in Les Quartiers de Nuits, acquired in 1930. The two plots are always harvested on the same day and aged together in sixty percent new oak with very light toasting, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2008 vintage is one of Burgundy's great underrated years—a difficult growing season marked by spring frost and summer mildew that produced tiny yields, but a dry September saved the harvest. The resulting wines are vibrant and energetic, built on acidity and minerality rather than weight, with exceptional freshness and precision. This Echézeaux shows juicy red fruit, earthy depth, and a crisp mineral backbone with silky texture. A Grand Cru that rewards attention and time—it continues to develop beautifully, with many years ahead.

Burghound

"An exceptionally spicy nose combines a broad range of notably ripe fruit aromas and earth notes that include red, blue and black pinot as well as anise, sandalwood and an interesting grilled nut character. The supple, round and delicious flavors seem quite accessible on the palate but tighten up quickly on the seductive, mouth coating and sappy finish that displays excellent depth and length. This will however need at least a decade to be at its best. An excellent effort."

Antonio Galloni

"The 2008 Echézeaux is flat-out great. It is a deep, dark wine graced with exquisite balance, lovely inner perfume and a layered, eternal finish. Here the slightly higher percentage of new oak (70%) gives the wine an additional measure of volume. The Echézeaux is made from two parcels; Les Rouges du Bas (just in front of Clos Vougeot) and Les Quartiers de Nuits (next to Clos Vougeot) vinified together. Everything of the Echézeaux is first-class." —Antonio Galloni

"Light, bright crimson. Quite rich with some real depth and great cleanliness and precision. Far from the richest Echézeaux from this address but very pretty. Long. There’s grip here."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"A minty accent graces black cherry and earth flavors in this slightly chunky red, which is a bit rigid now, but starts out silky, so let it settle down and absorb the tannins. Fine length. Best from 2013 through 2024."

More about Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg

In Vosne-Romanée, the Mugneret-Gibourg family crafts Pinot Noir from parcels that sit in some of Burgundy's most storied ground. North Berkeley Imports champions these wines, recognizing their singular expression of Côte de Nuits terroir. These reds taste like they've been rooted in terroir for centuries, even if the vines are younger. Serious stuff from a producer who lets the vineyard speak instead of imposing technique.
