Ravera is a historic cru in Novello, positioned higher than many other Barolo sites at 380m elevation—harvest often comes ten days later than lower-lying vineyards. This altitude, combined with mainly calcareous soils, produces wines of singular linearity and focus. The 2013 cool vintage amplifies this character. Dark, powerful, and inviting, with leather, plum, spice, and stone notes, this is austere young Barolo that will reveal extraordinary complexity over the next 20+ years.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2013 Barolo Ravera is dark, powerful and inviting. Here the flavors tend towards the darker end of Nebbiolo spectrum, with firm supporting tannins that add to an impression of power. Sweet spice, leather and plum notes develop as the wine gains volume in the glass. Today, the 2013 is powerful and tightly wound. Historically, the Ravera has needed a few years to unwind. I expect that will be the case here as well." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"This is a stunningly precise expression of Nebbiolo that shows exceptionally well in this vintage. The 2013 Barolo Ravera benefits from slightly higher altitudes that help to develop the singular linearity and focus of the wine. If many other celebrated crus, such as Cannubi and Brunate, exist at 250 to 350 meters, Ravera starts at 380 meters. That higher positioning means that fruit is harvested as much as ten days after the other sites. This wine offers a savory vein with iron and pencil shaving. But it also fills out generously over the palate with dark fruit and spice. This Barolo promise a long aging future." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

16.5 points

"Novello. Heady, dense nose. Sweet and round before massive tannins. Bit of a tease! Sweet and treacly."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Firm and unyielding today, yet with latent aromas and flavors of cherry, rose, tobacco and tar. Supported by a well-integrated structure, with vibrant acidity driving the purity and length. Offers a lingering aftertaste of tobacco and iron."

Kerin O'Keefe

97 points

"Wild berry, iris, rose and a potpourri of culinary spice aromas emerge on this stunning red. Radiant and full-bodied, the palate is young and primary at this stage but already evokes Morello cherry, licorice, pipe tobacco and aromatic herb. Bright acidity and taut, noble tannins provide impeccable balance and an impressive, age-worthy structure." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.
