From the Lester Family Vineyard, located three miles from the coast in Corralitos, Santa Cruz Mountains, this Pinot Noir comes from a site farmed by Prudy Foxx for beautiful fruit and natural acidity. The 2023 vintage was fermented with 50% whole clusters and aged in neutral French oak, capturing the coastal influence that defines the vineyard's character.

"Comprised of 667 and 777 Pinot clones with 50% whole cluster, pie de cuve, 100% neutral French oak, for 10 months. Savoury and elegant, with taut fruits and bright acidity, this is a wild wine at its ethereal best, characterised by lightness and savoury freshness that carries it through the fruit, featuring fresh cranberries, mint leaves, and notes of garrigue. Upright blood orange and wild spices. Feral, sauvage and bright fruited."

More about Farm Cottage Wines

Farm Cottage is the personal label of Ryan Alfaro, a second-generation Santa Cruz Mountains winemaker. It's where he makes the leaner, more adventurous Pinot Noir he wants to drink: whole-cluster, bright and transparent rather than plush.

Ryan's parents, Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro, founded Alfaro Family Vineyards in Corralitos in 1997, and Ryan now runs the cellar there too. After interning in New Zealand, he launched Farm Cottage with the 2019 vintage. It started when a little extra fruit came free from Trout Gulch, a cool, dry-farmed vineyard near Aptos planted in 1980, whose grapes had long gone to other winemakers. The name comes from the small house on the family property where his grandparents lived and where Ryan now lives himself.

The winemaking is deliberately hands-off: native fermentations, whole clusters for the reds, mostly neutral French oak, and minimal fining or filtering. The Pinot Noirs come from coastal sites a few miles from Monterey Bay, including Trout Gulch, the Lester Family Vineyard in Corralitos, and a Santa Cruz Mountains blend. Expect light-on-its-feet, fragrant Pinot with lively acidity and a savory, spicy edge from the stems. It's California Pinot for people who think they don't like California Pinot.
