A Bourgogne Rouge from a single plot of Pinot Noir planted in 1956 — 1.07 hectares of clay-limestone, farmed by the man who did more than anyone to drag Marsannay into the modern Burgundy conversation. Sylvain Pataille started with one hectare in 1999 and now works 15 with his brother Laurent, all of it in Marsannay, all of it certified organic with biodynamic methods and some of it ploughed by horse. That means the vines behind this regional-level bottling get the same treatment as the village and single-parcel cuvees that Burgundy nerds fight over, which is the whole argument for buying it: seven-decade-old vines and low yields for the price of an entry-level Bourgogne. Winemaking is deliberately light-handed — ambient yeasts, up to 15 percent whole clusters, gentle extraction, 10 to 12 months in barrel with just 15 percent new oak and minimal sulfur. The 2022 landed with freshness and structure in equal measure.

"The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge has a delineated and attractive bouquet, a little backward initially but opening with brambly red fruit and forest floor scents. The palate has a real "crunch" to it, more of a textural Pinot than one with obvious fruit flavors. Delicious." —Neal Martin

More about Sylvain Pataille

Sylvain Pataille is one of those rare vignerons whose hard work and dedication has elevated the overall quality and public perception of the wines in his village. Sylvain, and his brother Laurent, now farm 15 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Marsannay. They have been pushing hard to designate some of the special terroir there as 1er Cru, and it will likely happen soon. When you shake Sylvain's hands you are reminded that these are hands that work really hard! They are rough as sandpaper because he is out in the vineyards 11 months of the year. Sylvain is also a very talented chemist who so excelled at his classes in Bordeaux that he in the consulting enologist at 15 or so great domaines in Burgundy including Domaine Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny and Château de la Tour in Clos Vougeot. He is very passionate and devoted to his domaine in Marsannay which he built from nothing. His first vintage was in 1999. Like Bruno Clair he is an indefatigable champion of the village of Marsannay.

Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade. With the exception of small amounts of sulphur when needed, there are no additions whatsoever. His wines are both “natural” and completely classic . . . black magic!

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with mushrooms, duck breast with cherries, coq au vin, a mushroom and thyme tart, or a plate of jambon persillé and Comté.

Tasting Profile

Bright red fruit — cherry and raspberry — with a little earth and dried flowers behind it. Medium-bodied and fresh, with fine, gentle tannins and lively acidity. Oak stays in the background. Finishes clean and savory rather than sweet.
