A Bourgogne Rouge from a single plot of Pinot Noir planted in 1956 — 1.07 hectares of clay-limestone, farmed by the man who did more than anyone to drag Marsannay into the modern Burgundy conversation. Sylvain Pataille started with one hectare in 1999 and now works 15 with his brother Laurent, all of it in Marsannay, all of it certified organic with biodynamic methods and some of it ploughed by horse. That means the vines behind this regional-level bottling get the same treatment as the village and single-parcel cuvees that Burgundy nerds fight over, which is the whole argument for buying it: seven-decade-old vines and low yields for the price of an entry-level Bourgogne. Winemaking is deliberately light-handed — ambient yeasts, up to 15 percent whole clusters, gentle extraction, 10 to 12 months in barrel with just 15 percent new oak and minimal sulfur. The 2022 landed with freshness and structure in equal measure.

Tasting Profile
